HOUR OF PENANCE: “Si hablamos de Música Clásica, Giuseppe Verdi es el que más se acerca en términos de humor y agresividad a nosotros”

Hour of Penance es de esas bandas que los fanáticos del Brutal Death Metal técnico están expectantes a la hora de sacar un nuevo disco. Y de nuevo los italianos no nos han fallado, “Devotion”, seguramente será uno de los mejores discos del terreno extremo de este año. ¡Sin duda! Y después de varios años sin pisar terreno español como nos dicen en esta entrevista Giulio Moschini y Paolo Pieri, de nuevo lo harán, en este caso en 5 ciudades de nuestro país. De eso, del disco y de otras cosas hemos hablado con estos maestros de la Música.
 

MF.-¡Buenas, Hour of Penance! ¿Cómo estáis?

G: ¡Hola tío! Todo bien por aquí, gracias por preguntar. 

 
MF.-5 años hemos tenido que esperar para el lanzamiento de 'Devotion'. ¿Qué ha estado haciendo la banda durante este tiempo, aparte de preparar el nuevo álbum?

G : Bueno, Covid ocurrió justo después del lanzamiento de “Misotheism”, así que acabamos sin hacer nada durante casi 2 años debido al bloqueo en todos los países europeos, y desafortunadamente eso acabó interrumpiendo nuestro «flujo de trabajo» y los planes que teníamos para apoyar Misotheism con actividades en directo, así que básicamente nos puso en modo «stand-by». Tan pronto como todo se abrió de nuevo empezamos a tocar en directo de nuevo, sentíamos que Misotheism necesitaba más tiempo y merecía algunos conciertos más, era demasiado pronto para un nuevo álbum, así que en ese momento simplemente nos tomamos nuestro tiempo y por esa y otras razones Devotion acaba de salir este año. 

 
MF.-En este nuevo álbum debuta Giacomo Torti a la batería. ¿Cuáles fueron las razones de la marcha de Davide Billia?
 
G: Antes y durante Covid, Davide tuvo algunas lesiones que desgraciadamente tardaron en curarse, así que cuando tuvimos algunas ofertas para volver a los escenarios en 2022, tuvimos que encontrar un sustituto adecuado y tuvimos la suerte de encontrar a Giacomo, un batería fenomenal. Giacomo también vive cerca de nosotros y eso lo hace todo más fácil logísticamente, así que decidimos traerlo a bordo como miembro a tiempo completo de la banda.

 
MF.-La portada de 'Devotion' es un gran trabajo de Massimiliano Rocchi. Como se dice en el álbum, toda devoción a la religión es fanatismo puro y duro. Dicho esto, ¿no crees que el fanatismo por el cristianismo es tan dañino como el fanatismo por el satanismo?
 
P: ¡Me alegro de que te haya gustado! Massimiliano Rocchi es en realidad el fotógrafo, yo utilicé una IA para generar la ilustración, me llevó un poco de tiempo encontrar el mejor motivo, pero nos gustó tanto el resultado que decidimos utilizarlo como portada. Estoy de acuerdo con lo que has dicho, cualquier tipo de fanatismo religioso es completamente idiota. Puedo respetar a algunas personas que ven el satanismo como una filosofía individualista, pero considerar a Satanás, un cuento de hadas judío, como una entidad real a la que adorar, es realmente patético. Si crees esa basura y tienes más de 16 años, bueno, buena suerte con tu vida.

MF.-No solo en las portadas, sino también en la música, los grupos italianos cuidan mucho sus composiciones y su arte. Así que, si hubiera que comparar a Hour of Penance con un músico italiano de antaño. ¿Cuál sería?
 
P: Es una pregunta interesante… Si hablamos de música clásica, creo que Giuseppe Verdi es el que más se acerca en términos de humor y agresividad. Hay muchas diferencias, por supuesto, pero si nos fijamos en algunas de sus piezas más épicas, como las Vísperas Sicilianas o el Réquiem, tienen el tipo de sensación ampulosa que tienen algunas de nuestras canciones.
 

MF.-Háblemos de vuestro reciente álbum. Para nosotros y para muchos medios especializados, 'Devoción' entrará en el TOP 2024. ¡Enhorabuena!

G: ¡Muchas gracias! Me alegro de que os haya gustado. 

 
MF.-En este álbum está mucho más presente esa sinfonía oscura que pudisteis dejar en el punto de partida en 'Misotheism' (2019). Un Blackened Brutal Death Metal de lo más armonioso y diversificado. ¿Será esta la dirección a seguir en futuras producciones?
 
G: No lo sé, para ser honesto no seguimos ninguna regla cuando se trata de escribir un nuevo álbum. Creo que “Devotion” tiene un enfoque más directo en comparación con “Misotheism”, queríamos recuperar parte de la energía que teníamos en “The Vile Conception”, tener ese tipo de sonido de «bofetada en tu cara». Mientras que la música en “Devotion” todavía tiene algunas de las armonías malvadas que teníamos en “Misotheism” (aunque no necesariamente quiero llamarlo «black metal»). Siento que es un álbum más violento.

 
MF.-. Hablando de black, en el Black Metal cada vez salen más bandas, y la mayoría de las veces suenan igual, excepto de algunas... ¿Crees que el black metal está demasiado masificado hoy en día? ¿Podemos llamarlo una moda?
 
G: Estoy 100% de acuerdo contigo, y cada vez son más las bandas de death metal que hoy en día intentan incorporar ciertos elementos del black metal, desnaturalizando la esencia de su música.  A mí nunca me ha gustado el Black Metal, la verdad, así que no puedo decir mucho al respecto. No es lo mío. Tengo respeto por algunos de los pioneros, por supuesto... en cuanto al resto... es sólo reciclar ideas en el mejor de los casos. Siento que cada género ha llegado a un punto en el que es difícil encontrar una banda que tenga un sonido distintivo, en cuanto al Black Metal, lo que no ayuda es la imaginería asociada a él. Hay bandas que suenan e incluso parecen iguales a otras, y algunas se esfuerzan tanto por parecer malvadas que resulta doloroso verlas.
 
 
MF.-En canciones como 'Birthright Abolished' o 'Breathe the Dust of their Dead' queda claro que no sois una banda cualquiera de Brutal Death Metal. De hecho, desde hace unos años sois uno de los pioneros del nuevo Brutal Death Metal con sello de identidad. En la liga de honor del Brutal marcáis la diferencia en ciertas bandas, sabéis cuando es una banda u otra. ¿Puede Hour of Penance todavía innovar más en su música?
 
G: Buena pregunta y gracias por tus palabras. Creo que innovar e incorporar nuevos elementos al sonido de una banda va unido a la mejora de tus habilidades como músico, así que todavía hay mucho margen de mejora en nuestro sonido. Llega un punto en el que tienes que preguntarte si quieres seguir haciendo música de una determinada manera o si quieres «cambiar», esa es una pregunta que nos hicimos mientras componíamos Devotion. Hay bandas que han tenido carreras exitosas cambiando drásticamente su sonido, una banda como Septic Flesh (me encantan) por ejemplo, por otro lado bandas como Incantation o Cannibal Corpse han estado haciendo la misma gran música durante más de 30 años, tal vez cambiando algunas cosas aquí y allá. Creo que Hour of Penance tiene una discografía diversa, si comparas algunos de los discos que hemos hecho, ninguno suena exactamente igual al otro, aunque hemos mantenido nuestros riffs característicos y algunas de las características que nos han hecho ser quienes somos. Algunos lo han apreciado, otros nos han acusado de ser demasiado «nosotros mismos», pero es la música que queremos escuchar y tocar, y nos hace «felices» cuando subimos al escenario y la tocamos. Así que al final hemos seguido haciendo lo que nos gusta sin dejarnos influir por lo que piensen los demás.

MF.-A finales de este mes y principios del otro nos visitaréis en un tour pronunciado, en el que se estrenará en nuestra ciudad: Barcelona. Además de presentar el disco, celebráis vuestro vigésimoquinto aniversario como banda. ¿Habrá algún setlist especial?
 
G: No hay un setlist especial, pero seguro que intentaremos tocar al menos una canción de cada disco que hemos hecho hasta ahora. Además, personalmente estoy deseando volver a España, me encanta Barcelona, he estado allí 13 veces, es mi ciudad favorita de Europa.

G: Sí, hemos escuchado su música. Estamos deseando compartir escenario con ellos.

 
MF.-La escena italiana y española casi se tocan, la vuestra nos parece exquisita y muy personal, pero... ¿Qué bandas españolas conocéis y a cuáles os llevaríais de gira? JJAJAJAJA.
 
G: Me encanta Wormed y me han encantado sus últimos discos, así que sin duda giraría con ellos si hubiera oportunidad.

ENGLISH INTERVIEW

MF.-Hi, Hour of Penance. How are you?

G: Hey man. Everything fine here, thanks for asking 
 
MF.-5 years we had to wait for the release of ‘Devotion’. What has the band been doing during this time, apart from preparing the new album?

G : Well, Covid happened right after the release of Misotheism, so we just ended up doing nothing for almost 2 years because of the lockdown in every European country, and unfortunately that ended up disrupting our "workflow" and plans we had for supporting Misotheism with live activities, so it basically put us in a "stand-by" mode. As soon as everything opened up again we started playing live again, we felt that Misotheism needed more time and deserved some more shows, it was too early for a new album, so at that point we just took our time and for that and other reasons Devotion was just released this year. 
 
 
MF.-On this new album Giacomo Torti makes his debut on drums. What were the reasons for Davide Billia's departure?

G: Before and during Covid, Davide had some injuries that unfortunately took some time to heal, so when we had some offers to go back on stage in 2022, we had to find a suitable replacement and we were lucky to find Giacomo, a fenomenal drummer. Giacomo also lives near us and that makes everything easier logistically, so we decided to bring him on board as a full-time member of the band.

 
MF.-The cover of ‘Devotion’ is a great work by Massimiliano Rocchi. As the album states, all devotion to religion is pure and hard fanaticism. That said, don't you think that fanaticism for Christianity is just as harmful as fanaticism for Satanism?

P: Glad you liked it! Massimiliano Rocchi is actually the photographer, I used an AI to generate the artwork, it took a bit of time to find the best prompt but we liked the result  so much that we decided to use it as a cover. I agree with what you said, any kind of religious fanaticism is completely idiotic. I can respect some people who see Satanism as an individualistic philosophy, but to consider Satan, a jewish fairy tale, as an actual entity to worship, is really pathetic. If you believe that crap and you’re older than 16, well, good luck with your life. 
 
 
MF.-Not only in the covers, but also in the music, Italian bands are very careful with their compositions and their art. So, if Hour of Penance were to be compared to an Italian musician of yesteryear. Which one would it be?

P: That's an interesting question, if we're talking about classical music, I think Giuseppe Verdi is the one who's closer in terms of mood and aggression. There are a lot of differences, of course, but if you look at some of his most epic pieces like the Sicilian Vespers or the Requiem, they have the kind of bombastic feel that some of our songs have. 
 
MF.-Let's talk about your recent album. For us and for many specialised media, ‘Devotion’ will enter the TOP 2024. Congratulations!

G: Thanks a lot . I’m glad that you liked it! 

 
MF.-In this album is much more present that dark symphony that you could leave in the starting point in ‘Misotheism’ (2019). A Blackened Brutal Death Metal of the most harmonious and diversified. Will it be this direction to follow in future productions?

G: I don’t know, to be honest we don’t follow any rules when it comes to writing a new album. I think Devotion has a more straightforward approach compared to Misotheism, we wanted to bring back some of the energy we had on The Vile Conception, have that "slap in your face" kind of sound. While the music on Devotion still has some of the evil harmonies we had on Misotheism (though I don't necessarily want to call it "black metal"), I feel like it's a more violent album.

 
MF.-Talking about black, in Black Metal more and more bands are coming out, and most of the times sounding quite the same, except for some bands... Do you think black metal is too massified nowadays? Can we call it a fashion?

G: I agree with you 100%, and more and more death metal bands nowadays are trying to incorporate certain elements of black metal, denaturing the essence of their music.  I never really liked Black Metal to be honest, so I can't say too much about it, it's not my thing. I have respect for some of the pioneers of course... as for the rest... it's just recycling ideas at best. I feel like every genre has reached a point where it's hard to find a band that has a distinctive sound, as for Black Metal, what doesn't help is the imagery associated with it. There are bands that sound and even look the same to others, and some try so hard to look evil that it's just painful to watch.
 
MF.-In songs like ‘Birthright Abolished’ or ‘Breathe the Dust of their Dead’ it's clear that you are not just any Brutal Death Metal band. In fact, you've been one of the pioneers of the new Brutal Death Metal with an identity stamp for a few years now. In the honour league of Brutal you make the difference in certain bands, you know when it's one band or another. Can Hour of Penance still innovate more in their music?

G: Good question and thanks for your words. I feel that innovating and incorporating new elements into the sound of a band goes along with improving your skills as a musician, so there is still a lot of room for improvement in our sound. There comes a point where you have to ask yourself if you want to continue making music in a certain way or if you want to "change", that's a question we asked ourselves while writing Devotion. There are bands that have had successful careers by drastically changing their sound, a band like Septic Flesh (I love them) for example, on the other hand bands like Incantation or Cannibal Corpse have been making the same great music for over 30 years, maybe changing a few things here and there. I think Hour of Penance has a diverse discography, if you compare some of the albums we've done, none of them sound exactly like the other, although we've kept our signature riffs and some of the characteristics that made us who we are. Some have appreciated that, others have accused us of being too "ourselves"...but it's the music we want to hear and play, and it makes us "happy" when we go on stage and play it. So at the end of the day we've continued to do what we like without being influenced by what others think. 

 
MF.-Later this month and early next month you will be visiting us in pronounced tour, where you will debut in our city: Barcelona. Apart from presenting the album, you are also celebrating your twenty-fifth anniversary as a band. Will there be any special setlist?

G: No special setlist, but we'll definitely try to play at least one song from every album we've done so far. Also I'm personally looking forward to coming back to Spain, I love Barcelona, I've been there 13 times, it's my favorite city in Europe.
 
 MF.- Hahahaha! Thanks for the compliment. You will be accompanied by two national bands: Putrid Torso and Obstetra. Do you know them? When you go on tour with a band do you usually check their music?

G: Yes, we’ve checked their music. We’re looking forward to share the stage with them.
 
MF.-The italian and spanish scenes almost touch each other, where your scene seems to us exquisite and very personal, but... Which spanish bands do you know and which ones would you take with you on tour? JJAJAJAJA

G: I love Wormed and I loved their last records, so I would definitely tour with them if there was a chance.
