ENGLISH INTERVIEW

The first time I heard about Imperial Triumphant was in an avant-garde music forum, where a member posted a sharp comment about this ¨unique, sophisticated and uncomfortable contemporary extreme metal band¨, then, I went directly to explore  ¨Abyssal Gods¨ and was kicked hard by their massive flux of avant-garde (dissonant), jazzy, brutal sound, and amazed by their visual concept, a sort of ¨Gotham city¨ black and gold retro-futuristic aesthetics that points at mysticism and urban decadence.

¨Abyssal Gods¨ was a work that immediately attracted my attention for its creativity and determination, then I discovered ¨Vile Luxury¨ and instantly recognized their - at the time- more established vision of impregnating aggressive, uncomfortable music of Art Deco, jazz, decadence, masks and chaos.

W: First of all, congratulations on Goldstar (2025), it has been well received and seems to have won the band a lot of new fans and attention (same for Vile Luxury). Why do you think these records made such an impact, and do you feel it has changed the band´s profile and career path?

Z: No idea. We work hard on every record and some seem to hit really well with broader audiences. It’s likely that the shorter song format aided in grabbing the attention of new fans.

W: Imperial Triumphant´s musical style is extreme, somehow hysterical and enjoyable – but shaping this chaotic, dissonant wall of sound into ‘songs’ demands a lot of hard work and sweating. The process took years but its identity was ever-present, from “Abominamentvm” to “Goldstar”. How was the process of consolidating your artistic proposal (e.g. influences musically, lyrically and visually), and what were the main obstacles you have found when breaking through the industry while preserving your particular identity?

Z: The only obstacle is yourself. We have been releasing music since 2012. We didn’t receive very much attention until 2018 with Vile Luxury. That’s quite a long time to be playing small clubs to tiny crowds. We persevered because we worship music and creation.

W: You´re band recognized for fusing blackened atmospheres and dissonance with decadent, architecture-based modern aesthetics; what is your relationship with architecture and design? And what’s the relationship between architecture, cult, experimentation and Imperial Triumphant in concert from your perspective?

Z: I live in New York City, one of the architecture capitals of the world. I simply drew upon my environment for inspiration and the music speaks for itself.

W: You will be playing this year at Obon Fest in Bilbao. What significance do live performances have for Imperial Triumphant nowadays?

Z: It’s my favorite part of the job.

W: Sophisticated visuals and avant-garde uncomfortable music are complex artistic proposals, for some people this could be difficult to listen/appreciate, while for others it could be enjoyable. During the last decade you have been touring and releasing music, have you been able to determine the profile of your listeners? Who is the music fan that goes to your shows?

Z: Our fans are diverse. It’s not necessarily one type of listener. You can pull what you want from the music. If you want to sit there and count measures and see what odd meters we play, you can do that. If you want you bang your head and go berserk, you can do that as well.

W: When talking about Avant-Garde (dissonant) fusions of Death Metal, Black Metal, apocalyptic atmospheres and experimentation, we think of Imperial Triumphant, Gorguts, Ulcerate and Portal and others. At the same time, we think of the extreme difficulty those bands face to reproduce their songs live, given the atmospheric and multi-layered approach of the material. How do you manage to achieve those apocalyptic atmospheres, overwhelming chaos and experimentation live?

Z: We practice a lot. And we understand the difference between live performance and studio recording. They don’t have to be the same and they shouldn’t be the same. At our show, you will get a full and wild concert and it won’t sound like the record.

W: During the last 10 years the world has changed dramatically, from politics to culture and economics. In the case of music industry, the 2020 global lock-down was the starting point of a new era for bands and labels (not necessarily better or worse). According to your experience, what have been the main changes/challenges that bands have to face nowadays compared to 2016?

Z: The cost of touring goes up and the compensation stays the same. We aren’t in this for the money but keeping the machine going keeps getting pricier. Our love of music overwhelms the financial obstacles in the end.

W: Early 20-th century Modernism (sophistication, wit, intellect and creativity) was acutely strong and very influential in Spain, in particular in the region of Catalonia with Gaudi and other architects. Do you get to experience much of the local culture in Spain when touring?

Z: We don’t usually have much time to explore but perhaps this time we will.

W: You have toured a lot, the road is hard, so I assume you've had a lot of pleasant and unpleasant experiences. What was the worst concert/road experience you've had?

Z: Sometimes hotels rooms will have bugs or blood or filth everywhere and you have to sort finding new accommodations at 2AM in the middle of nowhere. This can happen in any country. Worst experience was splitting my head open in Serbia and going to the hospital to get stitches in the middle of the night. Made it to the show the next day though so… not too bad.

W: What are the next steps for Imperial Triumphant?

Z: Just wait and see.

W: Thank you for your time in answering these questions. In closing, what would you say to the fans that are going to see you in Bilbao and Madrid?

Z: Buy tickets in advance! We love Madrid and Bilbao!
